Well if you’ve made it this far - being pregnant - then you are no doubt familiar with what goes on between the sheets! Now that you are entering this new stage in your life, one of the many questions you may have is whether or not it's safe to have sex. Fear not, because we are here to answer all of your questions! Is sex still the same? Can it hurt your baby? Is it beneficial or harmful? Let us give you some insight on all things Sex and Pregnancy!

Is sex during pregnancy safe?

In short - yes (for a normal pregnancy)! Your abdomen, uterus’ walls, and the amniotic sac all work to keep your baby protected, warm, and happy while you and your partner have some intimate fun. However, sex can be unsafe for those with a high risk pregnancy, if you have a history with miscarriages or preterm labor, and especially if you are expecting multiple kiddos (twins, triplets, etc.)  Before jumping into sex, have a chat with your doctor to ensure safety for you and your baby.

Can sex during pregnancy cause me to go into labor prematurely?

No! But also, maybe. Unless you are a high-risk pregnancy, sex (or an orgasm for that matter) will not trigger premature labor - not unless your body is ready to deliver. In full-term or late-stage pregnancy, some doctors recommend having sex as a way to kick start labor. I know quite a few women it has worked for, so if you're past your due date and looking for a natural way to start labor, this could be it!

Does sex feel different while pregnant?

Well, it depends on who you ask! Every woman’s experience with pregnancy and sex can vary, so let’s be clear - there is no right or wrong way to go about this. Listen to your body and communicate with your partner on what feels right to you. With that said, here is the typical trend of libido during pregnancy:

  • First Trimester // sex is unlikely! Between morning sickness, fatigue, and a slew of other symptoms, it’s not uncommon for women to have a low sex drive.

  • Second Trimester // welcome back! As your early pregnancy symptoms begin to fade, you’ll notice an increased libido, a more cheerful mood, and even enhanced orgasms!

  • Third Trimester // wouldn’t count on it! As you’re delivery date approaches and your belly gets bigger, your less likely to want sex. The third trimester can be downright uncomfortable so doing the deed is probably the last thing on your mind.

  • Fourth Trimester // Postpartum is a time to give yourself and your body grace. The doctor may clear you for sex anywhere from 6-12 weeks, depending on your birth story. Some of you may want to jump back in the saddle right away, but most likely you will be too tired to even dream about it. Have patience, everything in the bedroom will be "back to normal" eventually, it just takes time.

What are the benefits of sex while pregnant?

Are there benefits of having sex while you are pregnant? Oh, absolutely! There's an array of benefits to having sex while pregnant, namely, mood boosting, sleep inducing, and partner bonding. Your mental and physical state go through so much during pregnancy, so having something that aids both is super helpful.

How can I make sex more comfortable while pregnant?

That pillow fort you built for sleeping, it's also good for sex! Find a way you can relax your body, and let the pillows hold some of your weight or prop you up. You'll want to choose positions that keep the pressure and weight off your belly, like side-lying or seated. And don't forget about oral sex! It is a pleasant alternative if one (or both) of you are just not up for penetration!

As we mentioned before, sex (especially during pregnancy) is in no way a “one size fits all” type of thing. Every woman, couple, and even pregnancy can differ. No matter where you’re at in your journey, remember to do what feels comfortable to you! And most importantly, have fun!
